By Charlie Marks, Ecogenia Ambassador, who shares the story behind an ambitious and deeply personal journey: biking nearly 500 miles from Minneapolis to Chicago in the heart of Midwest winter to raise funds for Ecogenia. A reflection on how simple, human-scale actions can inspire change and support climate resilience across Greece.
Last Spring, I had the chance to do a tour through the Balkans, where I met Lia at her home in Litochoro, the base of Ecogenia. Those few days I spent there were truly magical. I learned more about the origins of Ecogenia and the great progress it has made toward building climate resilience in Greece. I also saw firsthand how deeply the organization was rooted in the local community. It was a comforting reminder that even in a world facing big problems, our solutions don’t always have to be overwhelmingly huge.
After my time in Litochoro, I wrapped up the rest of my tour and headed back to life in America. A few months later, I started feeling a bit stir-crazy and realized I needed a little adventure. I already had plans to return home to Chicago for the holidays, but I wasn’t sure yet how I’d get there from Minneapolis. During that downtime, I started brainstorming out-of-the-box ideas to raise funds for Ecogenia this year. And honestly, it became clear that the ride I was considering was exactly what I needed. A bike ride during the transition from winter to spring in the Midwest felt like a fitting challenge—something that could hopefully inspire others to support Ecogenia’s work. So, after some light planning and some fumbling on the computer, I got my fundraiser going and hit the road.
Doing this ride to raise funds for Ecogenia has really brought home the idea that, despite the big challenges our world faces, sometimes the simple solutions are the most powerful. They might push us out of our comfort zones and challenge us—but they also remind us that the world is still a pretty incredible place. We all have a place in it, and we all have a responsibility to take care of it.
